Velma Rossa and her brother Oliver Asike are Nairobi fashionistas turned Instagram celebrities. They are the organizers of the popular Thift Social events at the Alchemist and they plan to launch a 2ManySiblings fashion line later this year.
What is 2manySiblings?
Velma: We are a brother and sister partnership with a passion to narrate the contemporary African story. We’re trying to tell a little piece of the story in this little piece of the world.
Where’s your favorite place to shop in Nairobi?
Velma: Gikomba. For me, it’s a treasure hunt experience. And it also is nostalgic because my mom took as there as kids and I guess she instilled a culture of bargaining for clothes and finding something unique.
What’s the best thing you ever found at Gikomba?
Oliver: Last year, I got a really good pair of Balenciaga sneakers for around 300 shillings.
Velma: A $100 note inside a pair of jeans.
What’s your personal style?
Oliver: I mix high end and low end. I can wear thrifted clothes with very high-end sneakers.
Velma: If Africa and SoHo in London got married and had a baby, that’s me.
What excites you right about fashion in Kenya?
Velma: I’ve noticed more platforms that are geared towards offering space and visibility to upcoming designers.
Oliver: I think it’s the younger generation pushing the fashion forward. They believe in what they do and they express themselves.
Who’s a Nairobi designer that everyone should know about?
Oliver: Monochrome by Munga. He has a studio so if you need something you just go there. He has a strong voice and a strong identity, that’s what I like.
Velma: M+K Nairobi. They have a studio in Kileleshwa, and they do a clean and minimal aesthetic with a pinch of African-ness.
